Namangan

The Namangan Region is situated in the northern part of the Ferghana Valley on the right bank of the Syrdarya River. To the North the plain meets the foothills of the Chatkal and the Kuramin Ranges. Climate in the Namangan Region is quite different from that of in southern and eastern parts of the Ferghana Valley: with so few cold days in the year local population cultivate such subtropical fruits as figs, pomegranates and persimmons. The city of Namangan is the center of the Region, Among the important landmarks of 500-years old Namangan are the Khoji Amin Mausoleum (18 c.), the Mulla Kirghiz Medrece and recently built Atavalikhonture Mosque.
A local cotton magnate built the Mullah Kyrgyz Madrassah in 1910. This Madrassah welcomes visitors to view the inner courtyard, a shaded hauz (courtyard) and 35 rooms for 150 students. While in the Khojamni Kabri Mausoleum only men may request a look at this 18th century imitation of the earlier portal and dome tombs. The Atavalikhonture Mosque (1915); is easily recognized by its immense dome – 14,1 meters in diameter, one of the largest in Central Asia.

The recently restored Mullo Bozor Okhund Mosque was named after the 17th century teacher of the Sufi poet Mashrab Babarakhim Mashrab Namangani.
The most important archeological site in the northern part of the Ferghana Valley – ancient settlement Akhsikent is merely 25 kilometers (13 miles) from Namangan. This settlement was destroyed in 17th century by a powerful earthquake and never rebuilt.

The Kok-Saray camping (which means "Blue Palace") is on the southern slopes of the Chatkal Range in the Nanai settlement, famous for its Namangan brand of apples. Here starttourist trails which lead to scenic places: upper Padshaata mountain stream, the Kapchugai Gorge, to the lakes with crystal-blue water high in the mountains and to the Alpine meadows. Here at the altitude of 1925 meters /5400 ft/, is the Sary-Chelek Nature Preserve. For its unsurpassed beauty the Sary-Chelek Lake and its vicinity is often called "Swiss Alps of Asia". Wildlife in this preserve is abundant: aurochses, deers, bears, wild boars, birds of various types.
Not far from the Kok- Saray camping is the city of Kasansay, known for its traditional silks and handicraft. The city of Choust features the Lutfulla Mavliana Minaret one of the most important architectural landmarks in the Ferghana Valley as well as the Choust Settlement dated back 1000 B.C. which is of apparent archeological interest.

The Chartak, balneological resort with mineral springs, recommended to those with neurological and digestal diseases as well as those with arthrites is also on the territory of the Namangan Region.
A number of sites, considered Holy by devoted Muslims - the Khazraty Mavliana mosque, the Syrii Mosque, the Mashad Mazar, the Sadbir and the Shakhidan are also in the vicinity.
